I wasn’t good with awkward silences, never had been. But the truth was, I didn’t know what to say at that moment. Ask him if he meant for me to stay the night? Ask his name? Ask if he meant to kill me? Make me his sex slave for the evening? 
But of all the things I could have asked him, I, Louise Sloane went with— 
“Are there no lights in this place?” 
A few seconds passed before a faint click, followed by a dim light in the kitchen. That was what I was granted. A stove light in a house the size of an airport. 
At least I could see his outline again. The Man, as I’d named him, was leaning against the counter with his arms crossed over his chest, staring directly at me. 
Watching my every move. 
Dear God, please forgive me for my sins… 
I dropped my bags next to the door, a loud clunk against the tile. 
Keeping my eyes on the silhouette, I lowered to the cold, slate floor. I leaned against the wall, the lip of the windowsill poking into my shoulder blades. Silence wrapped around me like a straitjacket as I stared at him, staring back at me. Although I couldn’t see his face, I memorized every line of his body in case I needed to meet with a sketch artist later. The man was definitely north of six foot, and heavy. Based on the way his round shoulders faded to a V at the waist, I assumed his size was from muscle, and that he was shirtless. 
Seconds faded into minutes without a single word spoken between us. 
The Man didn’t move. Simply stood in the shadows, watching me as I huddled next to the exit with my bags at my side. 
What the heck did he think I was going to do? He had to realize I had zero options. 
Minutes faded into an hour. 
Exhaustion gripped me but I didn’t dare close my eyes. 
I always wondered what it would be like to have a man watching you while you slept. In my fantasy, though, the guy had done it with little hearts dancing in his eyes, not a pistol in his hand. 
I leaned my head against the window. Frozen glass against heated skin. 
Why the hell was the house so cold? 
I pretended to close my eyes while watching him through the slits. 
I didn’t know who this man was, where I was, or if I’d even make it through the night, but I knew one thing for certain— 
I was totally, completely, one-hundred percent unwelcome in this house of ice.

✨Weekly Update: First Draft Hell and Flat Asses🍑

What are you up to today? Beautiful, fall-like weather here. Started the morning off with a 4 mile jog. Felt good. Working on my endurance, slowly but surely. Running has never come easily to me but as with anything, the more you do it, the easier it gets. Oh, I also got that DB Method thing to magically transform my flat ass. Scam? We’ll see. Stay tuned for my thoughts on that bad boy. Now family and book time. Gearing up for a week of plowing through the “first half of the first draft hell” of my next/next book. Hoping to hit mid-point by the end of the week.😬 Then, a little break from that to fix all the things wrong with my next release, when I get the first round of edits back from my editor. I can’t wait for you to read Jagger’s brother’s story, Ryder!! LOTS more on that coming very soon. And as hinted, it will be released EARLY! (YES YES YES!) It was a good week. I finished the first draft of my next book (💃🏻) and have begun editing. First up, content editing where I round out the characters, sharpen up the plot, the sentence structure, and ensure all the dots connect and make sense. I love this this phase of writing. My first drafts are nothing short of torture, with the goal being simply to get the crazy, half-thought-out story in my head out on paper, so to speak. Now, it's time to beautify. Still much more work to go, but this is the fun part. I've learned not to pressure myself to write a perfect first draft. I envy the authors who write clean first drafts. I am not one of those authors. Regardless, the draft is done and I'm getting that spark of excitement as I see the story coming to life. So awesome. How was your week? I hope you take some time to relax on this beautiful Sunday. For me, I was able to get a bit of work done early, now a few house chores (laundry - almost as torturous as that first draft. God, I wish I was a natural housekeeper!). Next up, relax and read, followed by a grill-out in the evening. Here's to another good week ahead! ❤️

The gun dropped from my face...

The gun dropped from my face, revealing an emerald gaze just as intense. Her eyes, the color of the budding leaves behind her, sparkled in the morning light. A breeze caught her long, black curls, sending a strand across a pair of succulent lips pressed into a thin line of scrutiny. She wore her trademark black tank top, and—dear Lord and everything holy—based on the erect nipples, no bra. A pair of faded jeans revealed hints of tanned skin behind ripped holes. Strappy sandals covered her feet over cherry-red toenails as electric as her eyes. 
My thoughts were suddenly short-circuiting between the snarling guard dogs at her ankles, simply waiting on a command to attack, and the pair of headlights pulling my gaze like a beacon to her chest. 
I didn’t like this. I prided myself on never being thrown off my game, and I was. Undoubtedly, one-hundred percent, thrown off my game. 
I cleared my throat, squared my shoulders and said the first thing that came to mind.
“You got a permit for that cannon, Miss Harper?” 
“You got a warrant to be on my land?” 
“Don’t need a warrant just to chat.” 
She shoved the nine millimeter into the band of her pants with an ease that verified her comfort level with it.
